How to Enrol Your Child in a Spanish School on the Costa Blanca

What English-speaking families need to know about enrolling a child in a Spanish state school, including the documents required and what to expect from the school.

Moving to the Costa Blanca with children brings a practical challenge most families do not fully anticipate: getting your child enrolled in a local school. The process involves paperwork, appointments, and ongoing communication with the school, and almost all of it takes place in Spanish.

This guide covers what you need, how the system works, and what to expect once your child is enrolled.

How the Spanish school system works

State schools in Spain are free for all resident children, regardless of nationality. The school year runs from mid-September to late June. Enrolment typically opens in the spring for the following academic year, though schools can accept applications throughout the year if places are available.

In the Valencian Community, which covers the Costa Blanca, children are taught in both Spanish and Valenciano. Most children from English-speaking families adapt over time, but the transition is smoother when the administrative side has been handled correctly from the start.

Documents you will need

Requirements vary between schools and municipalities, but as a general guide, expect to bring:

  • Your child’s birth certificate, with a certified translation into Spanish if it is a UK document
  • Your child’s passport or identity document
  • Proof of residence: your Padrón certificate and a utility bill or rental contract
  • Your own NIE and passport
  • Your child’s health card (tarjeta sanitaria) if they are already registered with the Spanish public health system
  • Vaccination record (cartilla de vacunas), which may need to be translated or annotated
  • School reports or records from your child’s previous school, with a certified translation

The school or your local ayuntamiento may request additional documents depending on your child’s age and year group.

The enrolment appointment

The initial meeting is held at the school or at the ayuntamiento, depending on the municipality. You will fill in a registration form in Spanish and present your documents to an administrative member of staff.

Questions will be asked about your child’s previous education, any health conditions or additional needs, and your contact details. All of this is in Spanish. If a detail is recorded incorrectly because something was misunderstood, it can affect how your child is placed and what support they receive from day one.

Ongoing school communication

Enrolment is the beginning, not the end. Parent evenings, meetings with teachers, written communications from school, and conversations with staff all continue in Spanish throughout the year.

If a concern arises about your child’s progress, behaviour, or wellbeing, the school will contact you in Spanish. Being able to understand and respond clearly is not a nice-to-have. It is fundamental to your child’s experience at school.

How Jodie can help

Jodie helps English-speaking families across the Costa Blanca at every stage of the school process. She can translate UK documents into certified Spanish before your appointment, accompany you to the enrolment meeting so that nothing is misunderstood on the day, and assist with individual meetings with teachers or school staff as they arise.

Getting your child settled in a new school in a new country is a big transition. The paperwork and the language barrier should not make it harder than it needs to be.
